AccD6, a key carboxyltransferase essential for mycolic acid synthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is dispensable in a nonpathogenic strain.
The study shows that the accD6 gene is essential for Mycobacterium tuberculosis but not for Mycobacterium smegmatis. It identifies an internal promoter (Pacc) for accD6 in M. tuberculosis, which allows for reduced expression of the gene without affecting viability.
