Resistance to antibacterial antifolates in multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: prevalence estimates and genetic basis.
The study identifies a novel gene, dfrL, which encodes a DHFR with ~35% identity to native and known resistant DHFRs, and is associated with high-level resistance to trimethoprim and iclaprim. Additionally, various mutations in dfrB and folP were found to confer resistance to trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, respectively.
