Disruption of the feoAB gene, which encodes a ferrous iron transporter, leads to increased metronidazole resistance in Bacteroides fragilis. The study shows that feoAB mutants exhibit a 10-fold increase in metronidazole MIC, and this resistance is reversed by iron supplementation.
