Cloning, characterization, and inactivation of the gene pbpC, encoding penicillin-binding protein 3 of Staphylococcus aureus.
The study identifies and characterizes the pbpC gene, which encodes penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP 3) in Staphylococcus aureus. Inactivation of pbpC resulted in decreased autolysis rates and minor effects on growth, but did not significantly alter methicillin resistance in the MRSA strain COL. However, reintroducing pbpC in a mutant strain led to a twofold decrease in methicillin MIC.
