Key Findings

The aminoglycoside resistance genes sgm and kgmB were cloned into a yeast expression vector to test their ability to modify 18S rRNA and confer resistance to G-418. However, neither gene conferred resistance in yeast, and the methylases failed to methylate 40S subunits or 18S rRNA, despite high conservation of the rRNA A-site.
