The study identifies the ferritin-like protein Fri as a mediator of β-lactam tolerance and innate resistance to cephalosporins in Listeria monocytogenes. Disruption of the fri gene increases sensitivity to penicillin G, ampicillin, cefalotin, and cephradine.
