The study shows that the L,D-transpeptidase YcbB can bypass the D,D-transpeptidase activity of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in E. coli, leading to broad-spectrum β-lactam resistance. This resistance requires the overproduction of (p)ppGpp and a chromosomal mutation.
